About Payton Smith

Hi, I’m Payton Smith, and I believe therapy should be a space where you can show up fully as yourself, without judgment, pressure, or expectations. I strive to create an environment where you feel safe enough to explore your experiences, process what’s been weighing on you, and begin to make sense of your story.

My role as a therapist is to walk alongside you, helping you reconnect with your strengths while building the tools needed to navigate life with more confidence. I use a flexible, collaborative approach that allows me to meet you where you are and adapt to what you need in each moment. I value going beyond surface-level conversations and creating space for meaningful, honest work.

I believe you are the expert of your own life, my role is to support, guide, and empower you along the way. My work is grounded in a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach, and I often incorporate techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT).

Education / Professional Experience

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Social Welfare from the University of Kansas, along with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I also earned my Master’s degree in Social Welfare from the University of Kansas.

I have experience working in trauma and crisis settings, including internships at the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) and Newhouse Domestic Violence Shelter in Kansas City, where I supported individuals from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of mental health needs. These experiences have shaped my ability to provide compassionate, individualized care while meeting each client where they are.

Whether you’re navigating something specific or simply feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure, therapy can be a place to gain clarity and move forward. You don’t have to do it alone. I’m currently accepting both in-person and virtual clients and would be happy to connect.
