About Melissa
Compassionate Guidance for a Healthier, Happier Life
My name is Melissa McKissack, and I am a licensed clinical Social Worker dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey to wellbeing. With over a decade of experience in the field, I am committed to creating a warm, collaborative, and empowering environment where clients feel heard, respected, and understood.
My passion for mental health began early in life, inspired by a deep curiosity about the human experience and a desire to help others navigate its challenges. I believe that everyone deserves to be met with empathy and authentic connection, no matter where they are on their path. My approach as a therapist is rooted in compassion, evidence-based practice, and a belief in each person’s capacity for growth and healing.
I hold a master’s degree in social work from Aurora University. Throughout my career, I have worked with diverse populations in both private practice and community mental health settings, addressing a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and relationship issues.
My therapeutic philosophy centers around the idea that healing is possible for everyone, and that therapy is most effective when it is a collaborative process. I strive to create a space where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts, emotions, and patterns. Using a client-centered approach, I tailor each session to the unique needs and goals of the individual.
Specializations and Services
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with adults, adolescents, and couples from all walks of life. My areas of specialization include:
• Anxiety and stress management
• Depression and mood disorders
• Relationship, couples and family issues – Level 2 Gottman Institute certified
• Grief and loss
• Life transitions (such as career changes, parenthood, or relocation)
• Self-esteem and identity concerns
• Trauma and post-traumatic stress – EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
I offer both individual and couples therapy, in-person and virtually, to best accommodate your needs and comfort.
What to Expect
Embarking on therapy can feel daunting, especially if it is your first time. My aim is to demystify the process and support you every step of the way. At our initial session, we will discuss your goals, concerns, and any questions you might have. This is a time for us to get to know each other and establish a foundation of trust.
Together, we will create a personalized plan that aligns with your values and hopes for the future. Each session is a confidential space where you are encouraged to express yourself openly, without judgment. Over time, you may discover new ways of coping, enhanced self-understanding, and a stronger sense of agency in your life.
Outside the Office
When not in session, I enjoy exploring the outdoors, reading contemporary fiction, and spending time with my family and rescue dog. I believe in the importance of self-care and bring this philosophy into my work with clients, encouraging them to find balance and joy in their own lives.
